Events/Meetings Fall 2009
September 8: Walk for Awareness
- 1 point will be awarded to everyone who participated in this annual campus wide walk. Please fill out the online form titled “Walk for Awareness”, located on the left hand side of this page.
September 10: Convocation
- 1 point will be awarded to everyone who attended either the 10:00 AM ceremony or 7:30 PM event on Convocation Day. Please fill out the online form titled “Convocation”, located on the left hand side of this page. You only receive 1 point for attending, even if you went to both.
September 20: Kick-off Meeting at Legends from 6:00-7:00 P.M.
- This will be our first official meeting for this Fall 2009 semester. The officers will introduce themselves, cover accomplishments from the Spring 2009 semester, talk about upcoming events, and answer any questions. Members will receive 4 points for paying their $10 semester dues and 3 additional points for bringing pennies and dimes.(These pennies will contribute to the university wide Pennies for Peace fundraiser. The dimes will contribute towards our nationally required service project for March of Dimes.) Pizza and drinks will be served at the beginning of the meeting.
September 22: Invitation Labeling Meeting beginning at 6:15-7:15 P.M. in Rhododendron room, located on the second floor of the Student Union.
- We will need members to label postcards, which will be sent out to all ASU students who are eligible to join Gamma Beta Phi at the end of this semester. This will not take long if we have enough people. Those who come will get 2 points.
September 29: Homecoming Blood-Drive
- Last year Appalachian successfully met the 1,000 pint goal, serving as the largest blood-drive in the state and the 10th largest in the country! To participate either by donating or volunteering in this year’s 1,000 pint drive, click on the following link to register…specialevents.appstate.edu. (Please remember to check your email within an hour of submitting the form to confirm your registration.) It does not matter which club you represented, all that matters is that you participated. Please fill out the online form titled “Fall 2009 Homecoming Blood-Drive” located on the left hand side of this page. If you donate or volunteer you will receive 4 points.
October 2nd: ASU Student with Service Dog gives educational session from11:45am-1pm, Linville Falls, 2nd floor of the PSU
- Check out the informative session with Mary Grey Wilcox and her service dog, Shiitake. Light refreshments will be available (bagels!), as she helps you understand a day-in-the-life for her & her dog, and why it is important to raise money for this worthwhile program. This program is informational only, and you will receive 1 point for attending this session & supporting our fellow ASU student! An online form will be posted for you to record your participation.
October 4: Adopt-A-Street starting at 4:00 P.M.; Meet in the Raley Parking Lot by 3:50 P.M.
- Gamma Beta Phi has sponsored a local road in Boone for many years. We need members to come help us pick up trash and other items so that our street looks nice and clean! If we get enough people, this will not take long at all. Members will receive 2 points for participating.
October 22: Restaurant Sponsorship, CiCi's Pizza, New Market Street, ALL DAY EVENT
- Cici’s Pizza will donate a portion of their proceeds from this day to St. Jude’s Children Hospitals. St. Jude’s is a research hospital that provides treatment to children who have chronic diseases. St. Jude’s accepts patients regardless of their ability to pay for the treatment. You can learn more about St. Jude’s at their website www.stjude.org. Club members will be encouraged to invite friends to come eat. Participants will receive 2 points for attending and an additional 2 points for every guest that they bring. An online form will be posted for members to record their participation.
October 31: Chi Omega's Free to Breathe 5k Run/Walk beginning at 9:30 AM,located at Duck Pond on Stadium Drive
- The Pi Kappa Chapter of Chi Omega is joining forces with the North Carolina Lung Cancer Partnership and the Susan C. Hicks Hope Charities to bring the Free to Breathe 5K to Boone this year. Susan Hicks passed away 3 years ago from lung cancer. She was one of the founding members of ASU’s Pi Kappa Chapter, but more importantly the mother of one of the Pi Kappa sisters, who is also a fellow Gamma Beta Phi member. Lung cancer is a disease that has affected many of us and the Pi Kappa chapter is committed to bring awareness of the disease to our community. Please visit www.freetobreathe.com to register. This event will be worth 3 points and online form will be posted for you to record your participation.
November 14: Appalachian Leadership Forum from 12:30 P.M. - 5:30 P.M., Plemmons Student Union
- The Appalachian Leadership Forum is put on annually by the Leadership Team and offers specific leadership tracks throughout the afternoon to help personalize a great experience for each individual. The first 50 people that register eat for free after the event. Sign-up by going to www.csil.appstate.edu and click on Appalachian Leadership Forum. An online form will be posted for you to record your participation. This will be worth 3 points.
November 19: Operation Christmas Child Collection, Mountain Laurel Room, 2nd Floor of Student Union from 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
- Support Samaritan's Purse by bringing a shoe box full of toys; find guidelines at the top left hand of this page under "Operation Christmas Child Guidelines," or at www.samaritanspurse.org. You will receive 5 points per box.
November: Summer Experience Meeting, location and timing will come soon!
- Vice president Abby Karns and a few other memebers will come together to share stories from their summer experiences. Members will receive 2 points for attending.
December 1: Holiday Meeting-Gifts for Unit 1541, location and time will come soon!
- We will be collecting toys and other items to give as gifts to the Troops and their families in Unit 1541. Gamma Beta Phi has supported Unit 1541 for the past couple of years and they have requested our support again, during this holiday season. Depending on their needs, we will either send out a wish list or collect $25 in donations/gift cards for them to purchase the items. This will be worth 8 points.
December 6: Inductions from 2:00-3:00 P.M. at Legends
- We really need current members to come set-up, welcome new members, serve refreshments, clean up, etc. An online form will be posted as we get closer to the date. You will receive 2 points.
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS:
Outside Service
- This includes any form of service that you participated in outside of the events planned with Gamma Beta Phi. Each hour will be worth 1 point. In order to receive credit, you must register this time through our website. We have a variety of interesting events planned, and while we encourage participation through Gamma Beta Phi, we understand that not everyone can make it work for them.
**Additional opportunities may come up throughout the semester. In this case, we will send out emails with information on the event.**
